Perfume de Gardenias, Jose Navas's latest work for his company, 'Flak', teases spectators' memories of the flower's intoxicating smell and then tries to compete with it.

Born and raised in Venezuela, Navas translates the southerner'sÊintimate relationship with the scent of gardenias into homoerotic urbanity in which nudity figures boldly....

Perfume de Gardenias wafts everywhere. Like any scent, it is intoxicating at first, but it doesn't last. But for one exquisite moment when two nude men, their limbs winking with tiny lights, fade into the skies and form a constellation, Perfume de Gardenias doesn't make a lasting impression.

New York Times review of "Perfume De Gardenias" by Jose Navas:

ELEGANT MOVEMENT IN HOT SURROUDINGS

quote:
MONTREAL -- THE collision of hot colors and cold lines in José Navas's home echoes the tension in his elegant dances. Fierce lime green edges generic white kitchen cupboards, while sunburst yellow and mellow burgundy play on the walls of the simple little apartment in a trendy section of central Montreal, reminders of the surrealistic contrasts in his choreography for his company, Flak.

New York Times review by Jack Anderson:

A HARSH ATMOSPHERE IN SPITE OF A NUDE DUET

quote:
Gardenias have a heady scent. But there was nothing intoxicating about José Navas's "Perfume de Gardenias," which received its New York premiere on Thursday night when it was danced by Mr. Navas's Montreal-based Compagnie Flak at the Joyce Theater.

Ouch! I haven't seen this show, but from what I have seen of Navas' work, I'm not surprised by the comments in the review posted by Basheva. I think I made some point about the emptiness of Navas' content of his last work in relation to his use of nudity in the 'Nudity in Dance' thread in the Issues forum...
